Photographer's Notes

About Jon Meyer

I became a serious photographer during a year’s sabbatical in the Berkshires in 1991-1992. In fact, some of the images in the Eastern Gallery are from that era. Since then, however, I have travelled widely and always with my cameras. I feel at home in the natural environment and every effort is made to faithfully and artistically record and render it, from the grand vista to the to the intimate vision. It is a labor of love to create an image that conveys the feeling and the beauty of the natural world. While I do work on my images in Photoshop, enhancing what is already there, I do not blast them with false color, make them into “high definition” caricatures, or use other tricks. You get what nature created, not what technology produced.

The Images & How They are Crafted

Nearly 20 years of travel and experience are represented in the gallery images. I hope that you enjoy them. I work with several cameras—35 mm., medium, and large format—in both digital and film. At various times, I use a Nikon F4 35mm SLR, a Nikon D2Xs digital SLR, a Hasselblad 205TCC medium format, and an ARCA Swiss 4x5 view camera. All of these cameras produce images of great clarity, fidelity, and detail but the camera chosen to record an image is the one that is best for the subject and the circumstances. As an example, for a landscape there is nothing that surpasses the color range, resolution, and scope of the view camera. For catching bees on the wing around wild flowers, however, the digital SLR with its flexibility and speed is the camera of choice.

The images on the website are only samples and there are many other images in my portfolio. If you are interested in a particular area or type of image, contact me. I will be happy to send other samples to you by email. When you find an image that you like, as much care will be taken in putting your choice to paper as was given to capturing it in the first place. It will be printed at the highest resolution and quality on archival papers with archival inks. Once in your hands, the print will be treasured art that will bring the natural world into your personal world.
